The Tale Tellers Present a Very Special Love Story
by Jenna Riemenschneider
The Tale Tellers will be presenting a very special love story for Valentine’s Day on Saturday, February 13, from 10:30
to 11:30 A.M. at the West Public Library. Brave Norman, a true story about a blind shelter dog who saves a child’s life,
will be read.
This month’s special guest will be a blind boxer named Braille. Braille is a registered therapy dog who belongs to Janice
Dobson. Dobson and her husband, Frederick, recently moved to West from Maine. Dobson said Braille’s message is
quite clear, “It is possible to rise above our problems and live a joyful life.”
Braille was born blind and left on the streets in San Antonio. After being in a shelter for nine weeks, the shelter was no
longer going to keep her. She was shuttled cross country by small aircraft pilots and was adopted by Dobson at nine
months of age. “Braille saved my life,” Dobson said when interviewed by teens at a recent story time planning meeting.
Braille is quite famous. She has been a fashion model for East Land Shoes and featured in Animal Planet Pet Stars as
well as in Boxer Magazine. Braille performs tricks that a seeing dog may not even be able to do. These tricks will be
displayed at story time for area kids to enjoy.
Since February’s storytime theme is dogs, Mrs. Dobson suggested that the Tale Tellers collect old towels, blankets,
detergent and/or bleach to donate to Fuzzy Friends, a non-profit animal shelter in Waco. The kids are asked to bring
an old towel or blanket, but everyone is welcome to attend regardless.
The Tale Tellers have worked very hard to interest local children in reading and learning at storytime. Teens usually
meet once weekly and try to present storytime once a month, which involves much time preparing. The Tale Tellers
have about fifteen teens who volunteer throughout the year. The group enjoys spending time with the kids and look
forward to seeing them at each presentation.
