Everyday, it is not uncommon to pick up our local newspapers or see
TV coverage of the latest dog attack.
Believe it or not, they cost everyone of us higher premiums for our
homeowner and renter insurances.

Owning pets today, puts all of us at a higher risk for the insurance companies. Year after year,
new regulations are put into place. Society in general expects us to ALL be responsible owners
for our dogs actions. Thus liabilities falls into our hands. As owners we need to provide more
then just food, shelter and medical needs.
The State of the American Pet Highlights is a survey conducted in Aug., 2001 by the Purina
Company and points an assortment of surprising findings.
The one that jumped off the page for me, was one in five dogs only receive formal obedience
training outside the home. Out of 100 dogs, that means only 20.
The day will come for dog owners to prove their commitments to their dog/s, society and the
insurance companies. Their dog/s will need to prove as well behaved companions at home and in
the community by obtaining/passing the American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen Award, which
now suggests that they be re-tested every two years. The goals of the program are to 1.) teach
responsible dog ownership to owners and 2.) provide basic training and good manners to dogs.
Below are links that give an overview of the situation and something for every dog owner to
think about and be responsible for, prevention.
